My 2008 and 2009 fitness goals
As a start:
- Develop a training plan that will get me ready for all three legs of a sprint-distance triathlon.
- Do a 5k run/walk (I’ll be walking). Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis in Raleigh, NC is on Dec 6, 2008. And I get to wear bells (though after 5k of bells jingling, that might be like water torture).
- Within the next 6 months, be a volunteer for a triathlon and cheer people on (I wanted to volunteer for the Ramblin’ Rose, but I have to get on a plane to China that day! I guess volunteering in the morning with my kids and then hopping on a plane will be a bit too ambitious.)
- Um… what comes between that and a triathlon? I guess go for an open water swim somewhere? Participate in a 5k run only event? Participate in a short bike event? I need to go peek at Marshmallow’s goals again to see what ideas I can rip off borrow.
- Find a club? I’ll have to do some drive-bys wearing dark glasses to see what sorts of people are at the practices. Or maybe I’ll call for volunteers at the Y where I work out.
- Um… I have no idea how far out to set a date for a sprint-distance triathlon. I’m tempted to say a year to year-and-a-half. Thoughts? I guess I need to see how I respond to training. Maybe my goal is to make a decision by January after I’ve trained for four months or so.
How fun!

I think the sooner the date, the better, with regards to the sprint distance triathlon. After a while you get to the point where you just want it to be over!
And with regard to the beep test, you can read about it here.
I just found the perfect race to start with: Dash for Divas — I think I could do this with no training (except for running 2 miles, I confess). Well, OK, I don’t want to do one with no training, but I had no idea there were such short intro races! (Swim 250 meters, Bike 7 miles, Run 2 miles Women Only) Too bad it’s in 6 days.
