What’s your biggest remaining challenge?

50/50 by Karnazes and what really motivates me (hint: not just losing weight)

I know I still owe you the final Influencer post, but I had to interject this one!

So, I’ve been telling anyone who will listen that I’ve made a big personal breakthrough: Exercising to lose weight sometime in the future? Yawn. That’ll last a few days. However, having a goal like riding my bike to work or the store or doing a challenge like a lazy man’s triathlon or working up to running 5k — irresistible.

In 50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days — and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance!, I was so interested to read about Karnazes‘ experiences meeting runners who had lost significant amounts of weight. When he talked about his observations about their motivation, he hits the nail on the head for me:

There’s something about the goal of finishing a marathon… that enables an individual to establish exercise as a daily habit and shed excess weight. Strangely enough, those who start running with no other goal than to lose weight often do not have the same level of success. For whatever reason, people find more motivation in looking months ahead to the dream of completing an event — which, for most, will be the hardest physical challenge they have ever faced — than they find in simply trying to run three or four miles a day to lose some fat.

Yes, yes, yes!

That quote was awesome!! I am thinking about going for a 1/2 marathon in the spring and doing the full one in Baltimore next fall. The goals of finishing those races is a big motivator in how I will get my butt out to run! Thanks for visiting my blog and sharing!

That rings so true. There are days I find it so hard to get off the couch and get active. It’s like there is more pain in exercising than in trying to lose the weight. I’m wondering if it’s only me who finds it difficult to stay motivated?

Andrew, thanks for mentioning the book on your blog or I might not have come across it or even considered that someone like me, as far from marathoner as could be, should read it. But now I’m feeling more marathoner-like :D

I think you made such a great point in this post. Sometimes going outside the “weight loss bubble” and focusing more on what your body can do is a good way to complete a challenge. I know that I for one am super-competitive, so I’m going to try to look at it like that. Thanks for an ah-ha moment.

You know, Bella, it’s a downright relief to not be focused on weight loss all the time. :-)
